The regional technical consultation on the current 2016-2017 cereal and food balance sheets as well as the 2017-2018 outlook was held in Bamako, Mali, from 27 to 29 November 2017. The participants made the following observations:
1.In terms of rainfall, seasonal levels were generally normal to surplus. However, poor distribution and an early end to the rains in some places affected crops and biomass production in Burkina Faso, Chad, Gambia, Mauritania, Niger and Senegal. The situation is more critical in Cabo Verde where there was little rain at all.

The Cadre Harmonisé (CH) is the current regional framework for consensual analysis of acute food insecurity situations. It aims to have the results of food insecurity analysis applied to prevent food crisis by identifying affected areas and populations and proffering appropriate measures to improve their food and nutrition security and livelihoods.
Members of PREGEC met in Conakry to discuss the progress of this year’s agro-pastoral campaign, the agricultural outlook and the food situation. In preparation for the campaign, governments and their partners made significant strides in helping farmers and pastoralists obtain agricultural inputs (seeds, fertilisers and pesticides) and veterinary materials (vaccines). In addition, food and humanitarian assistance measures have been implemented for vulnerable populations.
