Joint Statement on Refugees
We, as a coalition of organisations and community groups from around Australia, are writing to express our concern regarding the humanitarian crisis that Australia has created.
Successive Australian governments have managed and funded offshore detention camps on Manus Island and Nauru. The people detained there are clearly Australia’s responsibility. This situation has reached crisis point, and immediate action must be taken.

APHEDA donors helped the health volunteers from our Philippines partner organisation reach over 7,000 patients during six medical and relief missions in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan.
In 2013-14, our projects continued to help working men and women in developing countries learn income-generating skills, strengthen their human rights and workplace rights, and provide a better standard of living and greater hope for their children.
A six-year-old child in Gaza has already lived through three wars. And the 50-day assault by the Israeli military in July and August this year is being described by those living in Gaza as the most severe ever.

In the past week, Thai authorities have announced that they are discussing plans to return more than 130,000 refugees back to Burma from camps on the Thai border. Authorities have also announced an operation to check migrant worker documentation in Northern Thailand.
