Press statement congratulating Transparency International Zimbabwe

Makorokoto! Amhlope! Congratulations!
Transparency International-Zimbabwe

The Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum (the Forum) wishes to congratulate Transparency International-Zimbabwe (TI-Z) for officially launching the Advocay and Legal Advice Centre (ALAC) in Bulawayo on 04 August 2012. ALAC, which has two main components; free legal aid provision to victims and witnesses of corruption and advocacy for social and institutional reform for combating corruption, was first launched in 2009 to provide citizens with a forum to report corruption, propose solutions and seek advice.

By launching the ALAC in Bulawayo, where citizens can actively participate in the fight against corruption, the TIZ has shown its commitment to engaging and empowering the public to deal with corruption-related issues and to providing services to different parts of the country apart from Harare where its head offices are based. The Forum is proud of the work by its member organisation, TI-Z and commends the organisation in its endeavours to “promote good governance by fostering a culture of accountability, transparency and integrity through research based advocacy, public educational awareness, policy advice and monitoring.” In particular unveiling in a more focused and non partisan way, what the state established Anti – Corruption Commission has failed to unveil.

Corruption is a human rights issue as it prevents the full realisation of economic, social, political and cultural rights. It is our hope that the second Advocacy and Legal Assistance Centre will generate more information on corruption that will lead to institutional reforms and a change in value systems to more ethical and moral conduct at a personal level.
