Central America – Floods/Heavy Rain (DG ECHO, National Authorities, Partners) (ECHO Daily Flash of 18 October 2018)

A low pressure system over the last two weeks has left 21 fatalities, more than 160 000 people affected, and 16 000 displaced in Central America. Rain continues to fall as a new system is beginning to form. More rain is expected in Honduras over the next 24 hours. The Permanent Contingency Commission of Honduras (COPECO) maintains a yellow alert for Copán, Ocotepeque, Lempira, Intibucá, La Paz, Comayagua, Francisco Morazán, El Paraíso Valle and Choluteca. Authorities continue to provide assistance to 7,728 people affected. In El Salvador, Sonsonate is one of the departments most affected. To date six deaths have been reported, 1 546 houses flooded. Rain will continue in coastal areas. Flooding occurred in Guatemala and Jutiapa departments. Mudslides have been registered in Mixco, and 20 houses were damaged in Escuintla. A yellow alert is still in place. In Nicaragua a red alert was issued in Matagalpa, Jinotega, Nueva Segovia, León, Managua, Chinandega and Región Autónoma de la Costa Caribe Norte y Sur departments. The rest of the country will remain in yellow alert. Matagalpa has been the most affected department and classes have been suspended. Water shortages are reported in Matagalpa and Estelí City. National authorities report some 25,000 families affected at national level since the beginning of the rainy season.
