Uganda: Emergency Update on the South Sudan Refugee Situation - Inter-Agency Weekly | 2nd – 29th August 2017

HIGHLIGHTS

  • 11,910 South Sudanese refugees arrived in Uganda between the 2 nd and 29th of August at an average daily rate of 425. The number of South Sudanese refugees in Uganda has now exceeded one million, and stands at 1,012,475.

  • New arrivals report that heavy rains, flooded rivers and worsening road conditions are making it difficult for South Sudanese refugees fleeing fighting in their country to reach safety in Uganda.

  • Infrastructure in Amuru has been damaged by the flooding, including Unyama Bridge, which connects Adjumani district to Palabek Settlement. The damage continues to affect movement of people, goods and services to a number of locations in and around Amuru district. Response efforts are underway.

  • Omugo Settlement, an extension of Rhino Camp in Arua district, commenced receiving refugees on the 1st of August, and has so far received 6,130 refugees from South Sudan. Two schools and an Early Childhood Development centre are under construction and health services are being expanded.

  • The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby visited Belameling and Mirieyi refugee settlements in Moyo and Adjumani districts on the 2nd and 3rd of August. The Archbishop was accompanied by Hon. Musa Ecweru, Minister of State for Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees, and Archbishop Stanley Ntagali, the Primate of Uganda. The Archbishop prayed with refugees in the settlements and promised to advocate for peace in South Sudan.

  • Rosemary McCarney, Chairperson of the UNCHR Executive Committee, visited Uganda from 26-29 August. After visiting Kiryandongo settlement, meeting with government officials, the UN country team and implementing partners, the Chairperson praised the Ugandan model in relation to implementation of the Comprehensive Refugee response Framework (CRRF)
