YEMEN - Complex Emergency
• On 21 April, Saudi Arabia announced the end of the military campaign in Yemen. Aerial bombardments by the coalition are expected to stop, but the air and sea blockade of the country will continue. In addition, conflict on the ground has intensified with different local parties continuing their fighting.
• As of 17 April (WHO), 944 people have been killed and 3,487 injured.
• In Amran governorate, at least 3,512 households were internally displaced.
• In Haradh, a town close to the Saudi border hosting thousands of African migrants on their way to Saudi Arabia, the situation is reportedly dire. The district has experienced airstrikes in recent days and the situation is tense due to its proximity to the Saudi border.
• UN agencies and their humanitarian partners in Yemen are planning a first mission of international staff to the country on 26 and 27 April.
NEPAL - Swine flu outbreak
• An influenza-like illness outbreak has been reported in Jajaorkot district since the end of March. The outbreak has affected 3,357 people and caused 24 fatalities.
• The Nepalese government deployed medical and rapid response teams to contain the epidemic. WHO is providing expertise, logistics support and training for health staff.
• The government has not issued any request for international assistance so far.
CHINA - Severe weather
• Severe weather, including rain, hail and winds affected a number of provinces of China in the past few days, causing floods and damaging houses and crops.
• The provinces most affected were Shaanxi, Shanxi, Gansu, Hunan, Guangdong, Guizhou, Yunnan, Guangxi and Chongqing.
PERU - Severe weather • Since October 2014 heavy rain, hail, snowfall, thunderstorms, floods, landslides hit several areas of Peru, affecting more than 155,000 people across the country. Particularly affected were the regions of Loreto, Arequipa, San Martin, Cajamarca, Tumbes and Moquegua.
BRAZIL - Severe weather
• A tornado reportedly affected the state of Santa Catarina on 20 April, causing casualties and damage in the city of Xanxerê (Media).
• As of 21 April, there were two dead, 120 people injured and over 1,000 people homeless.
AUSTRALIA - Severe weather
• Strong winds and heavy rainfall affected New South Wales in the last few days, causing floods.
• Media report power outages in the affected areas and floods in the area south-west of Sydney.
• As of 22 April morning, a severe weather warning, for strong winds and heavy rains, is in effect for Illawarra region (BOM).
