ASYLUM GIVERS: UNITED STATES AND GERMANY: In 1999 Germany estimated that it had more than 1m refugees and asylum seekers (USCR estimate: 285,000). In north America there are 1.2m, of which 1.1m are in the US. Asylum seekers in western European countries are mainly from Asia and Europe (ex-Yugoslavia, Rumania, Bulgaria, Turkey, the ex-Soviet Union, Sri Lanka, Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan).
