Pertussis/Whooping cough

  • Vanuatu: The Vanuatu Ministry of Health officially declared a Pertussis (Whooping Cough) outbreak on Tanna Island, Tafea Province on 18 August 2025. As of 30 November 2025, 656 cases have been reported across Tanna, Efate, Nguna, Erromango and Futuna, including 3 infant deaths with a decrease in hospitalisation. Cases reported on Efate are epidemiologically linked to the initial Outbreak in Tanna. Based on confirmed local transmission, pertussis outbreak is also declared in Erromango, Nguna and Futuna. Most of the cases are above 1 year of age, with Vanuatu National hospital reporting the highest number of pertussis cases during the outbreak period. Out of the 8 clinical samples sent to Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory (VIDRL), 7 have tested positive for Bordetella pertussis with an additional 19 confirmed cases reported from tests conducted locally in Vanuatu. In response, the Ministry of Health activated emergency operations centres and partnered with UNICEF, WHO, and other stakeholders to coordinate outreach, media campaigns, and door-to-door vaccination drives in hotspot areas.
