Dengue

Tonga: As of 07 April 2025, the Ministry of Health reported ten new dengue cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the total confirmed cases to 445 since the declaration of the Outbreak on 19 February 2025, primarily affecting 10-19-year-olds. Ten patients are currently hospitalised, all reported to be in stable condition, with no death reported so far. Authorities continue case investigations, mosquito control and public awareness efforts, urging residents to eliminate breeding sites, use protective measures, and seek medical attention for severe symptoms. The serotype that is responsible for this current outbreak is Dengue Virus Type 2 (DENV-2) identified by the Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory (VIDRL), Melbourne Australia. Fiji: As of 23 March 2025, the Health Ministry has reported that there have been over 5,100 cases of dengue fever nationally and a dengue death of a high school student from the Western Division. The Ministry declared a dengue fever outbreak in the Western Division on the 03 February and launched targeted interventions, including house-to-house surveillance, larviciding, mosquito control measures and public awareness programs. The dengue serotypes causing the current outbreak are Dengue Virus Type 2 (DENV-2) and 3 (DENV-3). French Polynesia: In EpiWeek 13, 60 new cases (55 confirmed and 05 probable) were reported. Since November 27, 2023, a total of 1,517 cases have been recorded, including 1,377 confirmed and 140 probable cases. Two new hospitalisations were reported in EpiWeek 13. Both the positivity and hospitalisation rates decreased compared to EpiWeek 12. Influenza
- French Polynesia: In EpiWeek 13, 22 new influenza cases (17 type A, 05 type B) were reported. Among these cases, there were eleven hospitalisations reported. Since EpiWeek 03, 459 influenza cases were reported (94% type A and 6% type B), with a total of 141 hospitalisations and ten deaths. Both positivity and hospitalisation rates have increased during this reporting period. French Polynesia: Since June 14, 2024, a total of 691 confirmed cases of pertussis have been reported. Pertussis activity slightly increased in EpiWeek 13, with positivity rates showing an increase trend. A total of 23 hospitalisations have been reported since June 14, 2024, and one death was recorded in EpiWeek 46 of 2024 in an infant. Since the last report, two additional cases have been reported. New Caledonia: As of 07 April 2025, 218 cases of pertussis have been reported since April 2024, out of 1,440 samples tested. In 2025, 47 new cases have been reported with 32 cases recorded in January, ten cases in February and five cases reported in this current month. New Zealand: As of week ending on 28th March, weekly pertussis cases in New Zealand increased to 51 from 42 in week ending on 21 March, bringing the total reported cases since the beginning of 2025 to 1044. According to the latest report from the Institute of Environmental Science and Research (ESR), since the start of the national epidemic on 19 October 2024, 2,075 confirmed, probable and suspect cases have been notified. Of these, 175 cases (9.0%) have required hospitalisation with one reported death, with 84 (53.2%) of the 160 cases in infants under 1 year hospitalised. Chikungunya
- Reunion Island: The ongoing chikungunya epidemic in Réunion has now spread across the entire territory, with continued growth and 5,832 confirmed cases and over 18,000 medical consultations between 17-23 March 2025. During this period, 129 people were hospitalized for more than 24 hours, including 25 pregnant women, 17 infants, and 14 newborns, some of whom were admitted to intensive care due to severe forms of the disease. Authorities recommend strict mosquito protection measures for pregnant women and young children, as the chikungunya vaccine is not suitable for these groups. Dengue
- Australia: Queensland Health declared a Dengue outbreak in Townsville City LGA on February 19th, 2025, with 11 confirmed and 2 probable cases as of 31 March 2025. The Dengue Virus Type 2 accounts for 77% of the cases. Measles
- Situation in Australia, Canada, Vietnam, and the United States: In Australia, measles activity continues to rise across multiple states. Western Australia Health has confirmed a new measles case, bringing the total to 12 since 19 March 2025. Victoria reported a new locally acquired measles case with the individual infectious at multiple locations in Melbourne and Gippsland with no links to overseas travels or known cases. This brings the total number of cases to 15 in Victoria for 2025, with five being local transmissions mostly among unvaccinated individuals. In Canada, for Week 12 (March 16-22) there have been 119 new measles cases (104 confirmed and 15 probable) bringing the total to 615 cases (514 confirmed, 101 probable) across six provinces, the most affected provinces include Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. In Vietnam, measles cases have surpassed 2024 figures in the first quarter of 2025 prompting the Health Ministry to issue an urgent directive and intensify nationwide vaccination efforts. In the United States, a total of 607 measles cases have been reported across 22 states as of April 03, including the death of a second child from Texas due to measles pulmonary failure.
