In the past year, over one million Syrians have registered as refugees* in Turkey. Syria is also the primary country of origin of arrivals to Europe via Turkey, with over 550,000 Syrian arrivals to Europe since 2015 and over 60,000 so far in 2016. Turkey and the EU are negotiating a joint action plan to support Syrian refugees and host communities and to prevent irregular migration flows.
An ISSG-facilitated cessation of hostilities in Syria went into effect on February 27. Earlier in 2016, a pro-regime offensive on Aleppo displaced over 75,000 people in northern Syria, disrupting a key humanitarian corridor and pressuring displacement sites and host communities, such as Daret Azza and Azaz, along the Turkish border. The UN predicts continued conflict could displace 100-150,000 from eastern Aleppo city and cut humanitarian aid to up to 300,000 people.
