Turkey, Guvenli/Alakoy - Situation as of May 06 and June 24, 2011

A devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 at 5 km depth hit Van province on October 23,2011. Van province is located in eastern Turkey, and the earthquake was followed by a series of powerful aftershocks with magnitudes up to 5.6. The epicentre was located at 38° 37' 40.80" N, 43° 29' 9.60" E, at the village of Tabanli 19 km north-east of the city of Van between the Van Lake and the Iranian border. Several municipalities around the Van Lake were affected. More than 360 persons got killed and 1,300 were injured. About 2,300 buildings were damaged or destroyed.
The map shows the settlements Guvenli and Alakoy, located at the eastern part of Van lake, close to the epicentre. In Guvenli nearly 150 buildings collapsed , more than 15 people died and many got injured.
Orthorectified and pansharpened WorldView-2 imagery (0.5 m spatial resolution), acquired on May 06 and June 24, 2011 serves as background.
