This map illustrates satellite-detected building damage assessment as of 16 February 2018, over the towns of Nukuleka, Hoi, Mua and Alaki, Tonga, following the passage of the tropical cyclone GITA-18. The analysis was conducted using post-event Pleiades images and a pre-event WorldView-3 image as of 12 January 2018. In total, 662 buildings were detected as potentially damaged. According to pre-event building footprints provided by Humanitarian OpenStreet Map, this represents ~46% of the total number of buildings present in the area. The town of Hoi was majorly hit, being 69% of the buildings potentially affected by the cyclone. The overall estimated damage level is classified as severe. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to UNITAR - UNOSAT.
