1. SYRIA – CONFLICT / CIVILIAN PROTECTION

• Mortar attacks in Shaghour, central Damascus, on 29 April; a school complex was hit.

• Explosions in the city of Homs on 29 April; air bombardments and heavy fighting in Aleppo.

• International human rights organizations called for a halt in the use of weapons indiscriminately targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure, such as barrel bombs.

2. U.S.A. – SEVERE WEATHER

• Severe weather, including tornadoes, strong winds and large hail, continued affecting south and eastern USA on 29 April.

• Floods in north-western Florida, due to the weather conditions.

• 'Slight Risk' of severe thunderstorms over parts of south-eastern and eastern USA for 30 April.

3. JORDAN – NEW REFUGEE CAMP

• Azraq camp, with capacity to accommodate 30 000, is officially opened on 30 April; it can be expanded to host up to 130 000.

• Azraq will take pressure off the densely populated Za’atari camp. The first transfers started on 28 April.

• Most refugees now arriving in Jordan will be hosted in Azraq.

4. NORWAY – FOREST FIRES

• During the last seven days, a number of fires have burnt a total of 986ha in the county of Rogaland, Norway.

• Media report all fires to be under control.
