Situation

  • SOUTH SUDAN: A record 101 638 displaced people are in protection-of-civilian (PoC) areas in eight UNMISS bases (see map). The PoC in Bentiu, Unity State, is facing a most worrying situation with almost 50 000 IDPs. Aid agencies are stepping up water and sanitation services, as well as the construction of a cholera treatment centre in case of an outbreak in Bentiu.

• 2 243 cases and 54 deaths from cholera have been reported. Juba still bears the bulk of cases (1 865). Rapid increase in Torit, Eastern Equatoria's capital, with 202 cases reported. Five states now have cholera cases: the three Equatorias (Central, Eastern and Western), Jonglei and Upper Nile (the last two states on one case each).

SUDAN: UNHCR reports that 85 705 South-Sudanese have now been displaced into Sudan since mid December (excluding Abyei). The relocation of people from Kilo 10 to El Redis, Joury and Al Kashafa (Al Salam locality) has been finalized this past week. Camps are approx. 10km from each other and about 1-2km from rivers.

• There are reports of increased criminality against humanitarians in Darfur, with staff being kidnapped. Trucks transporting WFP food commodities were looted in East Darfur and a WFP warehouse was looted in Gereida, South Darfur.
