Satellite detected water extent over between 24 to 28 May 2023 over Hiraan, Middle Shabelle and Lower Shabelle Region, Somalia

This map illustrates cumulative satellite-detected water using VIIRS along the Shabelle River in Somalia between 24 to 28 May 2023 compared with the period from 19 to 23 May 2023. Within the analysed area of about 39,000 km², about 1,400 km² of land appear to be flooded. Water extent appeared to be relatively the same since the period between 19 to 23 May 2023.

Based on Worldpop population data and the maximum flood water coverage, at least 112,000 people are potentially exposed or living close to flooded areas. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT).
