SITUATION

Snow and freezing rain affected Slovenia since 31 January causing extensive damage to the electricity and transportation networks in most regions of the country.

On 2 February, Slovenian authorities reported that around 80 000 client sites country-wide experienced power outages (approx. 10% of the population). Worst affected was the south-west region of Notranjska (Notranjsko-Kraska), where in the districts of Postojna and Pivka homes have been without electricity since 31 January.

On the same day, Slovenian Civil protection reported also severe situation with respect to power and transport in Mozirje, in the valley of Velenje, and in Cerkno.
Extensive power outages occurred also in the area of the capital Ljubljana. -
On 3 February, Slovenian media reported persisting power problems in Gorenjska, Koroska, Podravska, Notranjska and the capital area. See map for details and reports by the Power provider companies.

On 2 February, Slovenian Civil Protection requested electricity generators through the Union Civil Protection Mechanism. Austria (27 units), Czech Republic (1 unit) and Germany (3 units) have already offered and they are deploying assistance. Additional offers from Germany, Romania and Poland are currently being considered by Slovenian authorities.

For the next 2 days, Slovenian Meteo expects slight improvement with possible snowfall, however, in the centre and NW of the country. Red Alert for avalanches has been issued for the NW of the country.
