03 Mar 2025 - Réunion - Tropical Cyclone GARANCE

  • Tropical cyclone GARANCE crossed Réunion in the morning (UTC) of 28 February bringing heavy rain and very strong winds that caused floods and landslides. As a result of its passage, casualties and widespread damage have been recorded.
  • According to the Inter-ministerial Crisis Management Operational Centre (COGIC), four people died, six people have been injured (three of them seriously), and 180 people are still in shelters. Additionally, 90,000 houses are still experiencing power cuts, 8% of the population is completely without running water while 36% was affected by water supply issues, particularly in Saint-Benoit town.
  • National and local authorities are conducting rescue and emergency operations across the island.
  • Copernicus Emergency Management Service was activated (EMSR790) on 27 February and two maps have been produced so far.
  • For the next 48 hours, no more rainfall is expected across Réunion while GARANCE is dissipating over the southern Indian Ocean.
