SITUATION

  • Powerful Typhoon USAGI (named “ODETTE” in the Philippines) passed between Philippines and Taiwan on 21 Sep, making landfall in Itbayat Island (Batanes, Philippines). Strong winds and heavy rains affected Philippines and Taiwan (see impact in the map).

  • After passing Philippines and Taiwan USAGI moved NW towards the province of Guangdong (China), where it made landfall at around 11:40 UTC on 22 Sep, near the city of Shanwei, ca. 150km NE of Hong Kong. A few hours before landfall it had a max. sust. wind speed of 175 km/h. Strong winds and heavy rains have affected parts of the provinces of Guangdong and Fujian. JRC calculations indicated a possible storm surge of the order of 1.5-2.2m in the coastal area E of Shanwei (Guangdong) for 22 Sep.

  • After the landfall, USAGI moved NW over Guangdong, weakening. As of early on 23 Sep, a Yellow Rainstorm Warning was still in effect; heavy rain or rainstorm might hit Guangdong,
    Guangxi, Hunan, most areas of Guizhou, SW Jiangxi on 23 Sep.

  • As of early 23 Sep (UTC), the Chinese interior Ministry reports a total of 25 people killed, 220 000 evacuated and more than 7 000 houses collapsed or severely damaged in Guangdong.
    Media report also power outages and blocked roads.
