SITUATION
On 08 Oct a Tropical Depression, TWENTYFOUR (called SANTI in the Philippines), formed in the Pacific Ocean and started heading towards the Philippines. At 06:00 UTC on 09 Oct it was still a Tropical Depression (max. sust. wind speeds of 55 km/h) and its center was located ca. 550 km ENE of Catanduanes island (SE Luzon), moving WNW.
In the next 24h it is forecast to strengthen into a Tropical Storm and keep moving in the general direction of Luzon. According to the 09 Oct data, it may approach the Luzon coasts on 11/12 Oct, possibly strengthening further (track / intensity uncertainty is still high).
PHILIPPINES: Severe Weather
- Meanwhile, parts of central and southern Philippines have been affected by severe weather since 04 Oct. Heavy rains and thunderstorms have caused floods and landslides in a number of provinces (see inset map) in the regions VI, VII, IX, X and XII. According to NDRMMC (as of early 09 Oct) there were: 11 dead, 79 913 people affected, 30 635 people inside 69 evacuation centers and another 34 635 outside. Light to moderate rains and thunderstorms might still affect these areas in the next 24h.
