Situation Overview

• The current Lassa Fever outbreak in Nigeria shows an increasing trend in the number of cases and deaths in recent weeks. This is the largest outbreak ever reported in Nigeria.

• From 1 January to 11 March 2018, 1 386 suspected cases and 114 deaths have been reported across 19 states. 365 cases have been classified as confirmed and 9 as probable (Case Fatality Rate = 24%).

• A National Lassa Fever Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) was activated on 22 January to coordinate response activities in collaboration with WHO and other partners (ALIMA). WHO supports the outbreak response mainly in enhanced surveillance, contact tracing, strengthening of diagnostic capacity and risk communication.

• The reports of confirmed cases in different parts of the country and porous borders with neighbouring countries indicate a high risk of spread.
