SITUATION

Heavy rains affected southern Bangladesh and several areas of northern Myanmar/Burma over the last two weeks, causing floods and landslides.

BANGLADESH

• The heavy rains of the last few days has worsened the flood situation in southern Bangladesh.

• Floods were reported in the districts of Chittagong, Barisal and Khulna on 25 July. A landslide triggered by the rainfall in Cox's Bazaar on 27 July left two people dead and three missing, while it destroyed four houses. Last week, another seven people were killed by landslides in Chittagong.

FORECAST: Over the next 24 h, heavy rains (locally very heavy) may still continue affecting southern Bangladesh, in particular some areas of Khulna, Barisal and Chittagong divisions (Heavy Rainfall Warning, 27 July BMD). This may further deteriorate the flood situation in parts of Feni, Bandarban, Chittagong and Cox’s Bazaar districts.

MYANMAR / BURMA

• Heavy rainfall continues affecting Myanmar / Burma, aggravating the flood situation throughout the country, in particular in the northern areas.

• Over ten people have died due to floods in Mandalay Region and in Shan State since 24 July, according to media. Another seven deaths had been reported earlier, over 17-19 July, in Sagaing Region, the region most affected by floods, with over 70,000 people affected in 11 townships (48,500 in Kawling), nine dead and over 12,000 houses damaged.

FORECAST: Over the next 48 h, heavy rains may still affect several areas of Myanmar / Burma, including the areas already affected by floods.
