Mozambique: Flooding

Following rainfall in the south and neighboring countries, the Incomati River is above alert level and the Umbeluzi basin is almost at alert level, reaching 10.4 metres (Alert level - 5 metres). It is likely that the peak wave will reach Incomati Valley within 24 hours. Around 6,200 people are at risk of flooding in the districts of Moamba, Magude and Manhica and potentially having impacts on road access to the districts at risk.

Precautionary measures should be taken to avoid crossing rivers due to strong water currents in the basins of Umbelúzi, Incomati, Púnguè, Zambezi, Licungo, Lugenda and Messalo. Warning has been sent to people leaving in high risk areas by the local Disaster Risk Management Committees to seek temporary refuge on higher ground. INGC and DNA are flying over Incomati to monitor the peak wave level.

The Púnguè Basin is still above alert level, but with a slightly downward trend. The Zambezi basin remains above alert level at Maromeu but with a steady trend. The Limpopo basin is registering an upward trend but is still below alert levels. In the north, the Rovuma and Messalo basins remain above alert level but continue to decrease.
