Niger - Conflict
• Over the last two to three days, active combats between Boko Haram insurgents and a mix of patrols from Niger and Chadian forces took place in Diffa. Although no report is currently available, significant causalities are reported among the civilian population. On 9 February, the Parliament of Niger gave a green light for the deployment of additional troops in the Diffa area.

Sudan - Red Crescent aid workers killed
• Three Red Crescent Society aid workers were killed in the war-torn Blue Nile state on 8 February. The UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan condemned the attack, calling on all parties to ensure the respect of humanitarian personnel and international humanitarian law.

South Sudan - High-level humanitarian event
• A high-level event on the humanitarian crisis in South Sudan and its impact in the region was hosted by the UN and the East African Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in Nairobi. The humanitarian response to the crisis in South Sudan requires USD 1.8 billion in 2015 to assist 4.1 million people in need. So far, USD 618 million has been pledged for the humanitarian response to the South Sudan crisis, including €70.5 million from the European Commission.

South Sudan - Food crisis
• 2.5 million people remain food insecure at crisis and emergency level. There is particular concern for some areas in Jonglei and Unity States.
• In Lakes and Warrap States, the worsening food insecurity is linked to higher than usual flooding during the last rainy season.
• Food insecurity is expected to deepen according to seasonal patterns. The risk of a dramatic deterioration will be greatest between April and July.

Malawi - Floods / Population Displacement
• The UNDAC assessment results show: 230,000 people in displacement sites, 172 missing and 104 dead.
• The IFRC Emergency Appeal was launched on 22 January for CHF 2 639,620 for 9 months to support Malawi Red Cross Society provide assistance to some 42,130 people affected by floods.
• Britain will continue to support Malawi through the NGOs even though the direct budget support has been stopped.

Madagascar - Locusts
• Madagascar is currently facing a locust plague that could affect the livelihoods and food and nutrition security of 13 million people.

Madagascar - Tropical Cyclones
• Tropical Storm FUNDI caused heavy rains and floods in southwestern Madagascar on 6-8 February. As of 9 February (UN OCHA), approx. 2,000 people were displaced and 2,400 houses flooded. Only three weeks ago Tropical Storm CHEDZA caused damage and deaths in Madagascar.
• In the next 24 h heavy rain could affect north-eastern areas.

Australia – Severe weather
• Heavy rains affected north-eastern Australia over 7-8 February, causing floods in Mareeba. Media reported several houses damaged. Rainfall is expected to continue in this area on 11 February.

Indonesia - Floods
• Heavy rains are affecting the island of Java.
• Floods in Jakarta persist and a Flood Alert was in effect (as of 9 February).
• In the next 24 h, moderate rainfall may affect Jakarta.

Bosnia and Herzegovina - Severe weather
• Rain and snowfall affected northern Bosnia and Herzegovina over 7-8 February, causing damage to the electricity network and water supply, mostly in Brcko district and in the municipalities of Novi Grad, Krupa na Uni, Kostajnica and Oštra Luka.
• Snow and rainfall are forecast to continue in the north of the country on 10-11 February.
