Lebanon: Agricultural Stress Index (ASI): % of cropland area affected by drought (Dec 2016)

Attachments

The Agricultural Stress Index (ASI) combines vegetation condition and temperature variables to illustrate the level of stress experienced by crop areas. The compiled results are analysed longitudinally by comparing current values to the long-term minimum and maximum, and by spatially aggregating agricultural areas by administrative area.

Analysis

Planting of the winter wheat and barley crops, for harvest from mid-June 2017, started in October and extended in November - December. The ASI for December indicated crop growth in South and El Nabatieh governorates as well as the western parts of Akkar and North governorates. Crop growth could also be observed in southern parts of Bekaa and north of Baalbek-Hermel governorates, where cereals are predominant. However, no signs of crop growth could be depicted in most of Bekaa and Baalbek-Hermel governorates as crop planting was still underway in December.
