Situation Overview
- Since March, heavy rainfall has led to flash floods and riverine flooding across large areas of the Horn of Africa.
• Most of the flood affected areas are the ones already affected by the 2017 drought. The compacted soil reduced their capacity to absorb rain, further increasing the flooding.
• On 14 May, a low pressure area formed over the Arabian Sea. Over the next 48 hours, it is forecast to move over the Gulf of Aden, possibly strengthening into a tropical depression. Heavy rain and strong winds may affect the coast of Yemen, northern Somalia, and southeastern Ethiopia over 16-21 May.
