SITUATION

• Forest fires affected several areas of Indonesia over the last few months, especially the islands of Sumatra and Kalimantan. Since the beginning of July, over 2 million ha have been burnt (worst event recorded since 1997). The fires produced dense haze that affected also the neighbouring countries.

• The forest fires / haze situation has started improving over the last two weeks: air quality is improving and the number of fires detected has decreased, also due to the rains that affected Indonesia, especially Kalimantan since the end of October.

FORECAST: Over the next three months the probability of rainfall is forecast to be below-normal, also possibly linked to the effect of El Nino (the peak of El Niño is expected on Dec 2015-Jan 2016).

HISTORICAL FIRES: Forest fires affected Indonesia, especially from Aug to Oct. In 1997/98 drought and forest fires affected indonesia (1997/98 El Niño), causing the death of 240 people and also affecting Malaysia, Singapore,
Brunei and Thailand with dense haze.
