The following is a release by the United States Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center: A strong earthquake occurred OFF THE WEST COAST OF SUMATERA, INDONESIA ABOUT 65 MILES (100 KM) SOUTH-SOUTHWEST OF BENGKULU OR 350 MILES (560 KM) WEST-NORTHWEST OF JAKARTA at 5:45 PM MDT today, Jun 7, 2000 (Jun 08 at 6:45 AM local time in Indonesia). A PRELIMINARY MAGNITUDE OF 6.6 WAS COMPUTED FOR THIS EARTHQUAKE. The magnitude and location may change slightly as additional data are received from other seismograph stations. This earthquake is the second largest aftershock of the magnitude 7.9 earthquake on June 4, 2000 at 16:28 UTC No reports of damage or casualties have been received at this time; however, this earthquake may have caused damage due to its location and size.
