The following is a release by the United States Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center: A major earthquake occurred 85 miles (140 km) south of Bengkulu, Sumatera, Indonesia at 12:28 PM MST today, Feb 13, 2001 (Feb 14 at 2:28 AM local time in Indonesia). A PRELIMINARY MAGNITUDE OF 7.3 WAS COMPUTED FOR THIS EARTHQUAKE. The magnitude and location may be revised when additional data and further analysis results are available. This earthquake was felt at Jakarta. It occurred in the same general area as the magnitude 7.9 event of June 4, 2000. No reports of damage or casualties have been received at this time; however, this earthquake may have caused damage due to its location and size.
