SITUATION

  • Tropical Cyclone MATTHEW made landfall near Les Anglais (south-western Haiti) on 4 October at 11:00 UTC, as a Category 4 Hurricane, with max sustained winds of 230 km/h.

  • Over the next 24 h it is forecast to continue moving north, crossing the department of Grand'Anse (southwestern Haiti), and reach south-eastern Cuba late on 4 October, still as a Category 4 Hurricane.

  • Very heavy rain, very strong winds and storm surge may affect Haiti, Dominican Republic, Western Jamaica, Cuba, Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands over 4-6 October. Extreme rain may affect southern Haiti with total accumulation of 400-600 mm (isolated up to 1 000 mm).

  • According to official reports, as of 4 October (UTC), more than 600 000 people are already in shelters. Local media, as of the same date, reported in Haiti: two people have been killed in Les Cayes city and one more in Port Salut city, over 2 000 people evacuated and over 130 houses damaged in the Departments of Grand'Anse, Nippes, South and Southeast (Haiti). They also reported over 13 000 evacuated in the Dominican Republic, as of 4 October.
