Ecuador - 7.8 Mw Earthquake - ECHO Daily Map | 18/04/2016



• An earthquake of magnitude 7.8 M at a depth of 19 km occurred in the province of Esmeraldas (northern Ecuador) on 16 April at 23.58 UTC. The epicentre was located approx. 27 km south-southeast of Muisne city. USGS PAGER indicated shaking up to “Severe” for 103 000 people.

• National authorities reported that currently 272 people have been killed although this figure is expected to rise and at least 1 557 have been injured, as well as 370 buildings destroyed and over 151 affected, as of 18 April. The access to some affected areas remains difficult.

• A national state of exception/state of emergency was declared, as of 17 April. Priority is given to 6 provinces: Manabí, Esmeraldas, Santa Elena, Guayas, Santo Domingo and Los Ríos. The authorities immediately activated emergency protocols and funds to respond to the emergency as well as the entire national Emergency Operations Center in addition to the military and the National Police.

• DG ECHO local team in Quito is assuring attendance at the Humanitarian Country Team meeting and Humanitarian Donor's Group, and is coordinating with EU Delegation, Member States, national authorities and partners. Two DG ECHO technical experts have been deployed to the field to assess needs.

• Over the next 48 h moderate to locally heavy rain may affect the western, northern and eastern areas of the country, including the areas affected by the earthquake.
