SITUATION

• TC NEPARTAK made landfall near Taimali (Taitung county), on 7 July at around 22.00 UTC, as an intense Tropical Cyclone. A few hours prior to landfall, at 18.00 UTC, it had max. sustained winds of 240 km/h. After the landfall it crossed southern Taiwan, weakening. On 8 July at 6.00 UTC its center was located off the coast of Tainan county and it had max. sustained winds of 148 km/h.

• Over the next 24 h it is forecast to continue moving north-west and it may reach the province of Fujian (China) late on 8 July (UTC) with approx. max. sustained wind speed of 100-130 km/h. Heavy rain, strong winds and storm surge may affect Taiwan, as well as the eastern provinces of China which have already been affected by floods over the past weeks that caused widespread damage and casualties.

• As of 8 July morning (UTC), a Sea and Land Typhoon Warning is in effect in Taiwan, an Extremely Torrential Rain Advisory for the mountain areas of the counties of Chiayi, Pingtung, Hualien, Taitung and Kaohsiung City.
Torrential Rain and Extremely Heavy Rain Advisories are also in effect for the rest of Taiwan. An Orange Warning for Typhoon is in effect for eastern mainland China.

• According to media, as of 8 July morning (UTC), at least three people have been killed, another 170 have been injured and over 15 000 have been evacuated. Reports also mention, as of the same date, power outages in the counties of Taitung and Pingtung, as well as hundreds of flights cancelled from Taiwan.
