Since December 27, 2011 , a massive forest fire raged through the Torres del Paine National Park in Patagonia, Chile and has destroyed an area of about 125 sq km. Hundreds of military personnel and fire fighters were deployed at the scene to fight the blaze and managed to bring the fire under control on January 2, 2012.
The map shows the burnt area extent as derived by semiautomatic and multi-temporal image analysis of RapidEye data (5m resolution) acquired on January 01, 2012 and February 06, 2011. Additionally the fire hot spots (Modis) from January 2/3, 2012 are shown in the map.
Please note that only parts of the area could be analysed due to the cloud cover and cloud shadow.
