SITUATION

  • In the afternoon of 12 April a large wildfire that spread from forest areas to nearby houses affected the outskirts of Valparaiso, central coastal Chile, forcing evacuations of thousands of residents.

  • Early on 14 April (UTC) the wildfire was still burning according to ONEMI.

  • As of 02.30 UTC on 14 April, there were: 12 dead, 2 000 houses affected, more than 8 000 people were reportedly evacuated and more than 800 hectares had been burned.

  • Valparaiso has been declared a disaster zone. At least 5 000 personnel and 18 aircraft were involved in the fire-fighting operations on 13 April.

FORECAST: Temperatures in the area are expected to rise to more than 30 degrees on 14 April.
