This map illustrates satellite-detected areas of landslide and flash flood damage in the village of Rutunga, about 25 km south of Bujumbura, Burundi. Following heavy rains occurring 29 March 2015 in the region, a landslide and flash flood affected Rutunga, Bujumbura Rural Province. Using a satellite image acquired 3 April 2015 by the GeoEye-1 satellite, UNOSAT delineated the main landslide area that contains the overflowing of the river as well as mudflow areas. The black arrows indicate areas of landslide probably caused by flash floods and the red arrow points to a missing area of shoreline terrain possibly collapsed by the storm. The map extent shows how the National Highway 3 has been heavily affected along more than 2 kilometres and more than 60 structures were found to be severely damaged or destroyed. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to UNITAR / UNOSAT.
