Psychosocial Coordinator

Samos Volunteers (SV) is an independent group of volunteers providing non-formal education, psycho-social support and NFI distribution to displaced persons living on Samos.

The Psychosocial Coordinator is responsible for SV’s psychosocial projects for asylum seekers and refugees on the island including our informal education program, overseeing our two community spaces (Alpha Centre and Alpha Land), recreational activities and the LGBTQ+ support group, managing the teacher and community centre volunteer team and supporting the general field coordination efforts.

Starting date: 18th August 2025

Location: Samos, Greece

Status: Full-time, minimum 6 months commitment

Application deadline: 13th July 2025, on a rolling basis until a suitable candidate is found

Key responsibilities of the role include, but are not limited to:

Education program

  • Ensuring that the curriculum is up to date and context-appropriate at all times
  • Support teachers with their work through inductions, teaching resources, regular check-ins and registration of new students
  • Assessing educational needs and adapting the offer to them
  • Collecting student’s and teacher’s feedback on a regular basis

Administrative/ field coordination tasks

  • Ensuring that key documents are up to date at all times
  • Monitoring and evaluating the education project on a monthly basis (filling in the monthly report together with the rest of the Field Coordination team)
  • Management of the 2 working phones
  • Ensuring your own and the shared google drive (and Trello) is organised and that the content is up to date
  • Participate in the weekly field coordination meetings
  • Attend quarterly board committee meetings
  • Finance (ensuring that spendings are within the educational budget; keeping track of receipts; liaising with Sustainability Coordinator about needed donations)

Community centre

  • Overseeing the community spaces Alpha Centre (in town) and Alpha Land (next to the CCAC)
  • Supporting in shifts in SV’s community spaces
  • Line managing the 2 Community Centre Officers
  • Assessing the needs of the community and adapting the activities to them
  • Supporting the Alpha Centre and Alpha Land Officers in running the community spaces and planning and facilitating activities
  • Ensuring the safety and security in our spaces
  • Leading the implementation of emergency protocols in emergency situations

LGBTQ+ group

  • Planning and facilitating the LGBTQ+ meetings that take place once a week
  • Liaising with other (external) LGBTQ+ actors
  • Participating in the national working group
  • Advocacy and awareness raising of LGBTQ+ matters
  • Referrals to other organisations as needed

Key Requirements:

  • Minimum time commitment of 6 months and ability to stay in Greece without visa support;
  • Aged over 24
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong management, decision making and conflict resolution skills
  • Experience in Psychosocial support for minimum of 6 months
  • Experience in team management
  • Experience working in grassroots organisations (preferably in Greece)
  • An understanding of the complexity and challenges of humanitarian work
  • Flexibility. Living and working on Samos is constantly changing and adapting, and two days never look the same. The ability to be adaptable and flexible is extremely important
  • Driver licence
  • Fluent in written and spoken English
  • Awareness of cultural diversity (cultural sensitivity) and of displaced communities more generally

Desirable skills, knowledge, experience:

  • Farsi, Dari, Kurdish, Arabic, Greek, French or Somali
  • Good understanding of the asylum process in Greece
  • Background in Mental-Health Support

Further information:

The coordinator will have their reasonable living expenses refunded by the organisation in form of a stipend of 700€ per month. A private room in one of our shared houses is provided free of charge.

Mandatory time off: one week after three months of engagement; two weeks after six months if the engagement is extended for at least two more months.

The selected candidate will have to be able to provide a criminal record check and two references.
