General Female Volunteer (Women and Children’s Space)

The Victoria Community centre: Women’s and Kid’s space

Glocal Roots is a grassroots organisation operating in Greece and Switzerland since 2019, our solution: breaking the dependency cycle by building resilience and autonomy. We build structures and networks that support displaced people to become resilient, autonomous and self-reliant again!

Since May 2022, we are running a Women's and Kids' space in Athens, offering a clean, safe, and supportive environment. Children enjoy a child-friendly area with arts, crafts, and toys, while women can relax and access services provided by our partner organisations at the Victoria Community Center. In our textile maker space, refugee women can attend sewing courses, work independently, or join our paid sewing project. This helps them develop skills, earn a small income, and gain independence. Besides that we offer different activities depending on the skills of the volunteers and the needs of the women visiting our centre. We also assist in operating the Community Café, providing lunch, coffee, and tea, and creating a welcoming space for all genders.

Key responsibilities of the job include:

  • Provide appropriate support and guidance to the women and children in our space
  • Providing social support including maintaining an environment that strengthens the confidence, resilience and self-esteem of women and children
  • Prepare creative and simple activities for children to run in the space
  • Support with the distribution of sanitary products
  • Offer activities for women depending on the needs and your skills
  • Support in the Café with the distribution of coffee and tea
  • Attend weekly team meetings
  • Reporting any child or adult protection concerns to the Protection focal points
  • Remaining flexible based on the project needs
  • Cleaning of the spaces after your shift along with the rest of the volunteer team

Your set of skills:

  • An awareness and interest in migration issues and sensitivity to working with vulnerable communities
  • Motivation and passion for working alongside a dynamic and hard-working team
  • Flexibility
  • Reliability

Volunteers are responsible for covering transport costs to and from Athens as well as accomodation and board.
