The role:

The Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) is a disaggregated data collection, analysis, and crisis mapping project. The ACLED team conducts analysis to describe, explore, and test conflict scenarios, and makes both data and analysis open for free use by the public. ACLED material is regularly used to inform journalism, academic research, and public discourse on conflict, and to support the work of practitioners and policymakers. ACLED is the highest quality and most widely used real-time data and analysis source on political violence and protest around the world.

ACLED is recruiting a Web Manager to manage, optimize, and expand the organization’s web infrastructure. This is a part-time employee position with the possibility of full-time employment in the future. It is fully remote and can be done from any location with reliable internet service. The start date for this position is immediate. This position reports to the Senior Communications Manager. Only those with the legal authorization to work in the US (citizenship, permanent residence, or work permit) can apply, even if they do not plan to be residing in the US.

Specific roles and responsibilities:

  1. Manage all web content for the main ACLED website:
    1. Create new content (e.g. post reports, upload multimedia content, design pages and menus, etc.)
    2. Clean and optimize existing web content (e.g. update tags, correct formatting issues, oversee search engine optimization, etc.)
    3. Run maintenance and improve performance (e.g. manage site updates, review plug-ins and integrations, enhance site security, etc.)
    4. Prepare visual design outputs for digital and social media (e.g. thumbnails, Twitter cards, etc.)
    5. Identify and troubleshoot bugs and errors in coordination with ACLED’s server manager
  2. Liaise with the Communications team to identify and manage the creation of additional web content (e.g. custom interactive tools, embedded features, new landing pages, etc.)
  3. Oversee and coordinate upgrades to ACLED web infrastructure as necessary
  4. Design, develop, and manage new satellite websites and/or microsites for ACLED special projects as necessary
  5. Oversee the production and execution of ACLED’s overall web content strategy, in coordination with the Senior Communications Manager and the Director of Research & Innovation
  6. Support the creation of written and visual user guides for ACLED web content
  7. Support the monitoring and evaluation of web content analytics
  8. Perform other ad hoc IT support, administrative, and communications tasks as required

Skills and competencies:

  • Experience developing and managing web content through Wordpress (essential) and Squarespace (strongly preferred)
  • Experience working with HTML, CSS, and other basic coding languages (essential)
  • Experience managing a high-traffic website (essential)
  • Strong understanding of digital/information security approaches, tools, and systems
  • Fluency in English (essential); fluency in other languages -- especially French, Arabic, or Spanish -- is a plus
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Good judgment and extremely high attention to detail
  • Ability to work remotely and meet deadlines with limited supervision
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • A bachelor’s degree in computer science, communications, or a related field
  • 2-3 years of experience in IT, web content management, digital communications, or a related field (experience at a non-profit is a plus)
  • SEO experience (strongly preferred)
  • Familiarity with Tableau and GIS software (strongly preferred)
  • Experience managing servers, databases, and APIs (preferred)
  • Graphic design and video production/editing skills (preferred)
  • Familiarity with peacebuilding, conflict, human rights, and/or global affairs (preferred)
