Founded in 2012, The Syria Justice and Accountability Centre (SJAC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting meaningful justice for Syria that holds perpetrators accountable and addresses thegrievances of victims, leading to lasting peace and respect for human rights. SJAC is seeking a professional to work on its Data Analysis team, reporting to the Senior Data Analyst in Washington, DC, to process and analyze documentation. The Data Analyst will use his or her expertise to review, organize, and analyze documentation of humanitarian and human rights violations committed by all sides of the conflict in Syria (such as interviews, written documents, videos, etc.). Documentation will be labeled and stored within a special database using SJAC’s methodology, for sharing with transitional justice mechanisms. The Data Analyst will review documentation on both the offline and online servers, acting as a bridge between the two systems. This is an entry level position. Full-time.

General Duties:

  • Process documentation onto the SJAC database
  • Collaborate with the Data Analysis team to address and resolve complex issues and report on system bugs
  • Review content (documents, interviews, videos, pictures, reports, sound files, etc.) and extract information for use in analysis
  • Accurately tag and label different pieces of information in the database according to SJAC’s guidelines, methodology, and standards
  • Collaborate with the Senior Data Analyst, the Executive Director and the Legal Director to contribute to SJAC’s methodology for tagging and labeling content
  • Identify problematic areas and gaps in data and report to supervisor
  • Perform data entry in Arabic and English
  • Understand the context and background in which the content was created
  • Aggregate different pieces of information into groups and categories
  • Manage assigned projects related to offline data analysis, including the deliverables and consultants associated with the project
  • Participate in regular team meetings and collaborate with other staff and consultants working on documentation and transitional justice projects at SJAC
  • Perform other tasks related to the analyst expertise and area of work as needed


  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field or 2 years of related work experience in lieu of a university degree
  • Previous data entry experience
  • Full professional proficiency in Arabic (spoken and written) and English (especially written)
  • Knowledge of Syria and the Syrian conflict is a plus (including Syrian Arabic dialects)
  • Ability to securely handle confidential information
  • Willingness to watch and handle graphic content
  • Basic proficiency with software and online user interfaces
  • Strong work ethic and commitment to accuracy and detail
  • Ability to function professionally and effectively with co-workers and supervisors
