Chemonics seeks a security director. This position will be based in Baghdad, Iraq. The security director will lead the safety and security efforts for project employees in Iraq and lend oversight to the project’s security platform. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide strategic leadership, vision, and management to the security team and platform
  • Design the safest possible working environments for project staff by working closely with staff partners, communities and peers to enhance the capacity of field staff, providing routine and timely analysis and incident reports to project leadership, deploying as needed in support of field teams, and developing regionally consistent strategies for the management of safety and security
  • Directly support the Chemonics’ project office and the home office Security Management Unit in maintaining oversight for operations inside Iraq
  • Commission and review strategic and operational security information analysis and reports to provide consolidated and coherent information to project employees in Iraq
  • Develop and supervise the implementation of Chemonics safety and security policies and procedures in Iraq
  • Actively consider new and innovative ways of seeking continuous improvement in the delivery of safety and security best practices in Iraq
  • Conduct regular meetings with project leadership and participate actively in the strategic planning process, including discussions on safe, feasible, and innovative ways to implement project operations and activities
  • Contribute to the drafting of the project security platform budget and oversee security resource allocations and spending (equipment, training, staffing, consumables)
  • Assist in the recruitment of additional security management employees to the platform
  • Manage the technical implementation of security subcontractors to ensure responsible implementation of the overall project security platform in Iraq
  • Establish, develop, and leverage a network of high-level interlocutors inside and outside Iraq from both the international community and within senior Iraqi civil and military circles
  • Develop emergency action plans, security risk assessments, and contingency plans; lead incident, emergency, and crisis response efforts, including major situations necessitating the mass relocation of project staff
  • Collaborate with Chemonics training practitioners and security subcontracted staff to ensure that safety and security training is delivered within a systematic program that promotes interactive and participative learning and the personal development of project employees
  • Provide input and guidance in the curriculum and delivery of training courses, provide input on the safety and security components used in training courses, and recommend and deliver new course material where necessary


  • Minimum seven years of military, security, or law enforcement experience, with senior-level management exposure to the spheres of strategic planning, project and budget management, employee mentoring and leadership
  • Associates degree or higher in a related field of study, but a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent with a relevant level combination of experience may be accepted in lieu of an associate degree; preference will be given to candidates with a high level of demonstrated professional knowledge and extensive work experience
  • Proven effectiveness in implementing security platforms for civilian operations in conflict zones, including successful crisis management experience and management of private security providers
  • Knowledge of industry-wide safety and security best practices and a willingness to develop an in-depth knowledge of Chemonics’ security policies and procedures
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to establish and maintain positive working relations in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment while respecting local diversities and gender balance
  • Comprehensive oral and written skills and a proven ability to provide clear and precise instruction/briefings to a variety of internal and external audiences
  • Ability to use computer applications such as Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and OneNote as a tool for information management and internal and external communication
  • Security management and leadership experience in Iraq, Afghanistan, or Middle East is strongly preferred
  • USAID program experience desirable
  • Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required; a working knowledge of Arabic would be an advantage
