Lao Friends Hospital for Children (LFHC) is an acute pediatric teaching hospital situated in Luang Prabang, Lao PDR. It is operated by the New York based non-profit organization Friends Without A Border that is dedicated to providing high-quality and compassionate healthcare to the children in remote areas of Southeast Asia. In 2015 the hospital was opened on the same campus as the Luang Prabang Provincial Hospital and it has been developing its services since then. Average daily census now exceeds 40 patients in the inpatient wards and over 120 outpatients per day.

LFHC is a teaching hospital offering emergency, inpatient, outpatient, and surgical services to babies and children throughout Northern Lao. Limited on-site radiology, laboratory, and pharmacy services, together with a homecare program complement these clinical activities. A major goal of this hospital is to promote the clinical learning and professional development of the local staff such that key positions within the hospital are progressively filled by a well-trained and dedicated local workforce.

Position Summary An expanded, modern Neonatal Unit opened at LFHC in October 2018 and typically has a census of over 12 babies. We are seeking a Neonatologist who will be primarily responsible for the education and training of the Lao medical and nursing staff in neonatal care. In addition to bedside patient care and daily ward rounds, an additional major responsibility will be to help develop and implement clinical care protocols and assist the LFHC Medical Director with management of the Neonatal Unit.

Qualifications and Attributes:


1) A Medical Degree from an internationally recognized university

2) Registration to practice clinical medicine in the applicant’s home country

3) A higher qualification in pediatrics

4) Subspecialty training of at least 2 years in Neonatology and/or significant clinical experience in Neonatology

Highly desirable:

1) Additional training or experience in acute pediatrics and tropical medicine

2) Experience in managing a hospital department

3) Experience working in a developing country

4) Commitment to providing compassionate and nurturing care to patients

5) A high degree of humility, patience, and cultural awareness

6) Demonstrated leadership, organizational, and teaching skills

Specific Duties Include:

  1. Providing close supervision and assistance with clinical care to Lao medical staff in the Neonatal Unit.

  2. Development of medical policies, procedures, and clinical practice guidelines as necessary, in close collaboration with the Medical Director and Nursing Director.

  3. Initiating and supervising appropriate quality improvement activities including critical incident, morbidity and mortality reviews.

  4. Close collaboration with the Medical Director and Medical Education Director on all aspects of clinical supervision and staff education,

  5. Development of a Neonatal curriculum for Lao staff doctors and nurses and helping to deliver this training to staff.

  6. Lead by example in demonstrating excellent Neonatal care on a daily basis.

  7. Promote exclusive breastfeeding and optimal maternal nutrition.

  8. Strengthen relationship with Luang Prabang Provincial Hospital to improve their maternity staff’s skill and involvement with neonatal resuscitations.

Salary and Benefits

This is a funded role with possibility of extension. One week of leave will be given for each three months of work.
