Summary: The Executive Director (ED) will provide key leadership in the areas of strategy, program management, financial control, operations, fundraising and staffing. The ED will build and maintain relationships with community leaders, business partners, industry experts and high impact donors, while ensuring that the organization stays true to its mission.
Strategy: Implement, measure and determine financial viability of core programs tied to the organization’s mission statement and to the community’s needs. Lead strategic planning for the organization and ensure that senior management is equipped to implement this plan.
Operations: Supervise the recruitment and induction process of key senior staff and ensure that they are motivated, have access to professional development opportunities and are fairly and equitably compensated. Establish and support a high performing culture that connects the local and volunteer staff across all dimensions of the organization. Oversee the creation of clear job descriptions, outlining roles, responsibilities and performance measurement metrics. Review and manage all contracts with third parties. Study best practices in order to create processes that maximize organizational efficiencies. Ensure that the organization is compliant with relevant US and local NGO legislation and is present in NGO networks, as appropriate.
Programs: Provide leadership in the execution of core programs and ensure they are evidence-based and creating transformative, sustainable change as set out in global frameworks, such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Ensure that monitoring, evaluation and learning frameworks are in place and effectively implemented. Ensure that organizational policies are in place (child safeguarding, inclusion etc.), meeting global standards and putting the protection of program participants at the forefront.
Partnerships: Support program managers in the development and management of existing business, civic, NGO and Community Based Organization (CBO) partnerships. Seek out new opportunities for partners that align with the mission and values of Mayan Families and strengthen programs.
Financial Management: Collaborate with the financial staff and program managers to prepare the annual budget. Oversee all banking accounts and income streams, and maintain adequate and secure signatory coverage. Provide monthly financial reports to the Board of Directors, describing the organization’s financial health. Enforce strict accounting practices, including an annual independent audit.
Communication: Support the communications team to develop the marketing and communications strategy. Maintain a personal connection with the donor base through quarterly email messages or newsletters. Facilitate monthly all hands staff meeting. Attend and present an Executive Director’s report at all Board meetings. Serve as the organization’s primary spokesperson and ensure the organization plays a role in advocacy and awareness around their key areas of focus.
Fundraising: Direct a comprehensive fundraising program that is strategic with clear priorities. Build relationships with influential donors and civic groups. Manage the fundraising team through the grant process and support with creative ideas for income generation. Diversify and expand the existing donor base, seeking sustainable funding streams across all programs.
Masters in a relevant field (Public Administration, International/Community Development etc.) or equivalent extensive management experience as a former Executive Director
A minimum of five years’ experience in a similar senior management position
Highly developed people skills and a proven ability to manage large teams effectively and efficiently
Excellent bi-lingual Spanish and English communications skills; written and verbal
Knowledge and respect of indigenous Maya culture and the impact of recent history on cross-cultural partnerships and community development
Understanding of the program cycle and diverse MEL (monitoring, evaluation and learning) methodologies would be a plus
Understanding of change management practices
Proven ability to manage nonprofit budget in excess of $2 million USD
Experience with high level donor engagement and fundraising
Understanding of institutional donors and major grant funding would be highly desirable
Expertise in the field of education, indigenous community development or healthcare would be highly desirable
