Senior Major Gifts Officer

Location: EWB’s National Office, located in downtown Toronto.

About EWB:

The central challenge of our generation is to build sustainable and inclusive economies. In a context of deep and entrenched inequalities at the local and global scales and with a changing climate, the status quo trajectory of humanity is unacceptable. The stress is already felt across the world. The social entrepreneurship movement, new disruptive technologies and a renewed engagement of advocates across the world presents a unique opportunity to have systemic impact. EWB exists to create sustainable and inclusive economies. Our mission is to bring people and ideas together to address the most crucial causes of poverty and inequality. We are a global organization that combines leadership development, social enterprise investments and policy change to deliver impact in Canada and sub-Saharan Africa.

The Opportunity:

We are seeking an experienced major gifts fundraiser excited to apply their experience and skills to fuel the growth of social enterprises in Africa. The candidate will join our Major Gifts team and work closely with the CEO and senior leadership. The team creates inspiring partnerships with philanthropists and family foundations.

If you describe yourself as an ambitious, entrepreneurial and passionate business development, sales or partnership leader, and if you are excited to apply these skills to fundraising for a great cause, you may be our ideal candidate. This position is your opportunity to join a high pace team, have fun, and learn with and from others.

You will be one of four relationship managers. Together you will be pursuing the success of our Major Gift revenue strategy to support EWB’s mandate and programs. You will own and grow a portfolio of relationships. You will get to know intimately some of the most innovative and high potential early stage ideas existing on the African continent today. You will understand the finer details of EWB’s approach. You will champion lead generation and prospect identification/cultivation as well as one-to-one relationship building for a portfolio of relationships you own.

You will be surrounded by an incredible team of individuals who will challenge and support you to apply your skills and experiences to drive results. You should be ambitious about your professional trajectory and consider this role a platform to make your mark.

Some travel across Canada, the US, and to see our impact firsthand in East and West Africa.

About the team:

This position reports to senior leadership (VP/C-suite). You will work alongside other major gift / foundation relationship managers, and be supported by a development associate, development writer, and fundraising operations. Once you’re here, you will:

  1. Establish a portfolio: Cultivate a portfolio of individual major gift prospects ($25k+), quickly building your own portfolio of 35-50 active relationships. You will inherit some existing relationships and be expected to grow your portfolio with new relationships you establish. You will lead the development of gift cultivation and solicitation within the portfolio of prospects you will build.

  2. Cultivation and Solicitation strategy: You will support cultivation and relationship building of CEO and senior leader relationships, as a co-solicitor.

  3. Actively build a donor pipeline: Represent EWB in high stakes one-one conversations, and at key events to build major gifts pipeline.

  4. Contribute to fundraising planning and strategy: leverage organizational assets and campaigns for major gift fundraising.

Freedom to dream. The world needs people who dream big. EWB is that space for you. Fundraising never drives operational decisions. We don’t “follow the money” – program/strategy conception and design always comes first. Nobody will hold back your ambition to achieve more.

Freedom to grow. We ask all staff to take on challenging roles that help them learn through doing. The people you work with will give you honest feedback in an effort to help you grow and get better results. They will seek the same from you.

Freedom to act. You will have control over your work, mandate, and have the freedom to make decisions at tactical, operational and strategic levels. When you want to make things happen, you will. The organization is flat and you will have access to anyone in any position, and in turn they have access to you.

Freedom to think. Social change is hard to bring about. You’ll have the chance to think through the complexity of systemic change and work through solving some of the tough strategic, tactical and operational challenges out there.
