The Palacký University’s Humanitarian studies section at the Department of Christian Social Work is seeking an Assistant professor in the area of international humanitarian and social work. This is a full-time position committed to interdisciplinary research on the complexities of the humanitarian crises and responses they trigger with particular focus on the long-term effects on people and communities in the affected societies. This is a fixed term position funded for three years with a possibility of renewal.

Palacký University Olomouc with over 22 000 students enrolled is the second-oldest Czech university and one of the top state universities in the country today. Sts Cyril and Methodius Faculty of Theology, was the first among the faculties when Olomouc University was founded in 1573. It is located in the historical and UNESCO protected central area of the old town of Olomouc. The Faculty consists of eight departments and three research centers, dedicated to research excellence in the areas of social health and policy, intercultural, interreligious and ecumenical research and dialogue. The Department of Christian Social Work consists of two prominent sections, Social Work and Humanitarian Studies Section, and is open to applicants from different social sciences backgrounds interested in high quality and demanding professional training, uniting elements of scientific reflection and practical training with cultural-religious sensitivity.

Humanitarian studies section at the Department of Christian Social Work is the leader among Central and Eastern European universities for education in humanitarian assistance and international social work, with over fifteen years of experience in providing both undergraduate and post-graduate programmes. It is unique in delivering the practice-oriented education and preparing its graduates for the international careers in highly diverse humanitarian settings. The section's work involves interdisciplinary research and trans-disciplinary education with a broad-spectrum analysis of humanitarian actors that shape practices and policies of emergency and post-emergency landscapes around the globe. We offer a unique opportunity to develop critical approaches to global and local forces in the humanitarian responses and actual effects these have on the communities and populations in question. The added value is our embedded social work approach that focuses on the social development, social welfare and human services in the crises-affected areas.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

Requirements:

· Ph.D. in social science or humanities; preference in following disciplines: social work, sociology, social anthropology, political science, human rights and international law;

· At least three years of research experience at the level of Research Associate, or equivalent experience as independent researcher;

· Sufficient breadth/depth of specialist knowledge in the area of humanitarian studies;

· Advanced research skills i.e. command over qualitative and/or quantitative research methods and techniques to develop research objectives, projects and proposals;

· Evidence of skills to apply for tenders for research funding;

· Excellent command of English, both verbal and written.

· Experience of managing own workload and working in a research team;

· Adequate pedagogical competencies and experiences for the position;

· First-hand humanitarian and social work experiences are an asset;

· Willingness to learn Czech language is an advantage

The candidate is expected to:

· Closely cooperate with the Coordinator and colleagues of the Humanitarian Studies Section in performing excellent academic research;

· Independently contribute to the development of the research capacity and educational programmes of the Humanitarian studies;

· conduct evidence-based research on number of relevant humanitarian issues, independently and as a part of a research team; preferably focusing on complex emergencies, post-conflict recovery and community work;

· take initiatives in order to attract and develop research projects;

· promote and develop the Section’s level of national and international research exchange and networking;

· promote and develop Section’s cooperation with diverse actors of the humanitarian sector and international humanitarian organisations;

· teach selected courses (in English);

· supervise students research projects individually, e.g. in the framework of Master’s thesis preparation
