UNHCR has been receiving hundreds of refugees crossing the border into Iraq from northeast Syria. More than 1,600 Syrians have been taken to Bardarash refugee camp.
Of the 862,000 displaced by the conflict, the UNHCR states that 100,000 civilians are being held as human shields by ISIS fighters in West Mosul, where they are living without food, water or fuel.
This includes $60 million to assist more than 100,000 IDP families over the next 6 months with tailored protection support, tented shelter in camps, and basic household core relief items.
Returns to east Mosul are nevertheless happening at a slower pace, some 62,000 IDPs reportedly returned to their areas of origin, leaving close to 162,000 persons still displaced.
Expressing their “profound concern” for civilians in a joint statement, UN relief agencies and NGO partners need additional resources to support the tens of thousands of families who need help.
