The strongest typhoon in four decades to hit mainland China brought landfalls in four provinces: Hainan, Guangdong, Guangxi and Yunnan, damaging 468,500 hectares of crops.
Authorities said at least 17 people died after the typhoon swept across the tropical island province of Hainan and brought torrential rains and violent winds as it crossed to the mainland.
