People cross a flooded river with the help of a rope and porters after the bridge was washed away. Hurricane Matthew passed over Haiti on Tuesday October 4, 2016, with heavy rains and winds. While the capital Port au Prince was mostly spared from the full strength of the class 4 hurricane, the western cities of Les Cayes and Jeremie received the full force sustaining wind and water damage across wide areas.

Floods and the effects of Hurricane Matthew have left the state of infrastructure in serious need of repair. Many remote villages are still inaccessible by roads, if roads exist.
The situation is most critical in the West department, including Port-au-Prince (70 cases), Tabarre (66 cases), Carrefour (38 cases), and Centre
department particularly Hinche (67 cases) and Mirebalais (39 cases).
