Since April 2018, some 970,000 people have been displaced and are in great need of humanitarian support to help them get through Ethiopia’s cold and rainy season.
Initial findings by the inter-cluster technical assessment team that landed on the Yemeni island of Socotra on 29 May indicate that large parts of the food stocks have been destroyed by Cyclone Mekunu.
People affected by the cyclone in Socotra and Al-Mahrah need non-food items, food baskets, shelters, drinking water, medical supply and first aid kits.
The government called for humanitarian support as heavy rains and flooding on the island of Socotra have reportedly caused significant damage to public infrastructure and loss of life.

A new tropical storm has developed in the southwest Arabian Sea where it intensified into Cyclone Mekunu and is expected to make landfall near Salalah, Oman on about 26 May.
The Ethiopian government and partners providing limited first-line assistance, including food, NFI, WASH and health/nutrition support. However, needs surpass resources available.
The well-managed, government-led, lifesaving response will need to be sustained across southern and eastern parts of the country through much of 2018.
