Rains and unseasonal snow in Mongolia continue to hit vulnerable herders due to additional livestock deaths, despite the official government declaration that the dzud is over.
Despite a reduction in snow overall, the stress on vulnerable herders’ remains extremely serious due to the protracted nature of the disaster and increased rates of livestock death.
Since last December an estimated 41 per cent of the total herder population have been affected by harsh winter weather conditions involving extreme cold and compact layers of snow.
In total 965,000 people - mostly herders - have been affected by dzud and are on the edge of facing devastating cold, snow storm, loss of their livestock and food insecurity.
The loss of animals is increasing, as are miscarriages, which means fewer animals in the spring. During the last devastating dzud in 2010, more than eight million livestock died.
Interventions amounting to $2.4 million will come from the UN Central Emergency Relief Fund. About 60 per cent of Mongolia’s districts are in dzud or near-dzud condition.
