LISBON, Sept 17 (Reuters) - The death toll from a wave of forest fires in Portugal has reached 19 as hundreds of firefighters worked to prevent an upsurge in blazes, officials said on Wednesday.

Commander Antonio Gualdino of the National Emergency Operations Centre said the burned body of a man was found late on Tuesday near Monchique, in coastal mountains about 200 km (124 miles) south of Lisbon.

"He had been missing since Friday, and was found by relatives about 300 metres (yards) from his home," Gualdino said.

The European Commission has proposed to increase to €48.539 million Community support from the European Solidarity Fund for the fire-related disasters in Portugal this summer. This new figure changes the Commission's initial proposal of 27 August 2003 to award 31.6 million. The new figure is arrived at by applying the same methodology on an upward revised figure of total direct damage received from the Portuguese authorities within the deadline set by the regulation.

Brussels, 27 August 2003 - Some 355 976 ha of land had been burnt in Portugal by 20 August 2003, 301 180 ha of which was forest, according to figures derived from satellite observations by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC). The JRC used its remote-sensing expertise to map the extent of damage. These figures show that almost 6% of the forest area in Portugal was damaged twice that of the most severe year since 1980. It is equivalent to the total annual burnt area of all 5 Mediterranean countries in recent years.
