HANOI, May 6, 2002 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Forest fires raged again in U Minh Thuong National Park of southern province Kien Giang and in U Minh Ha forest in the southern tip province Ca Mau of Vietnam.

The fires broke out at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday in an area of 1, 200 hectares (ha) of 1-5 year-old cajeput trees and nearby areas, according to a report of Vietnam News Agency on Monday.

Heat signatures (red) and smoke (light blue haze) are visible in this MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) image from fires burning in Vietnam.  CNN reported that more than 4,000 soldiers and firefighters have been battling two wildfires in southern Vietnam.  Smoke (indicated by the yellow arrow) is visible blowing over the Gulf of Thailand.  NASA MODIS images can be found at: {http://modis.gsfc.nasa.gov/}

Heat signatures (red) and smoke (light blue haze) are visible from fires burning in Vietnam.  The smoke from this large fire extends several hundred miles out into the Gulf of Thailand.  The pinkish areas to the north of the fires are caused by reflected solar energy.

Hanoi (dpa) - More than 1,500 soldiers have been deployed to fight raging forest fires that have destroyed thousands of hectares of forest in drought-stricken southern Vietnam, an official said Monday.

More forest looks set to be lost this week as the firefighting effort faces equipment and manpower shortages.

Biomass Burning in Vietnam

Dozens of fires (red pixels) were burning in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia on April 2, 2002. There was a particularly large fire just southwest of Ho Chi Minh City near the southernmost tip of Vietnam. Note the large, grey smoke plume blowing westward in this scene.

This image was acquired by the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), flying aboard NASA's Terra satellite. Please note that the high-resolution scene provided here is 500 meters per pixel.

HANOI, Apr 5, 2002 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Fires that have been raging in Vietnam's U Minh Thuong National Park for the last 10 days destroyed more than 4,000 hectares (ha) of the country's virgin cajeput forest, the Vietnam News reported Friday.
